|“Whoever goes to the Opera is heading for Paradise”
It’s the motto of this year’s 2018 IMMLING FESTIVAL Season and we mean it quite literally. Over the last 22 years Immling fans have come to appreciate the heavenly unique symbiosis of idyllic nature and superlative music theatre.
There are three new opera productions this year: Giuseppe Verdi’s monumental work “Don Carlo” opens the season, followed by the Puccini classic “La Bohème” and the epitome of German national opera, “Der Freischütz” by Carl Maria von Weber. There will also be two further performances of “Orpheus and Eurydice” by Christoph Willibald Gluck, our much admired production from last season.
Festival Director Ludwig Baumann notes that quality standards have increased immensely since the festival’s inception 22 years’ ago. “It’s not just about the singers and musicians of whom we expect the highest professionality or the promotion of young talent who often go on to conquer the world stage. It’s also about Immling’s unique staging approach”. “Opera has to stay topical and keep up with the times”.
The Concert Program has been an essential part of the Festival for many years and has long since emerged from the shadows of the Opera productions. Our Musical Director Cornelia von Kerssenbrock has again included many magic moments, both in the Festival Hall and on the open-air Forest Stage, such as the great “Verdi-Gala”, an open-air concert entitled “Sound of Nature” – and as in every year the popular “Grande Finale”. Another guest appearance highlight this year is “Welcome Africa! – Living the Legacy”, a concert for the 100th birthday of Nelson Mandela with the MIAGU Youth Orchestra from South Africa.
“If we don’t take care of the young, we shan’t have any visitors in twenty years’ time”. Director Baumann is convinced of this. This year the International Singing Competition Immling celebrated its 10th anniversary. Our own Youth Program appeals to both children and teenagers with its Music Theatre offerings. Stage Director Verena von Kerssenbrock is putting on the musical “The Wiz – The Wizard of Oz” with teenagers from the Immling Academy and will fly “Around the World in 80 Days” with 6 to 12 year olds as part of the Children’s Culture Week. This year the proven “Young Opera” format features a very special “Der Freischütz for Children” adaptation.
