Immling celebrates 20-year anniversary

10 June – 14 August 2016

Magical moments, fiery and uncompromising fervour, captivating sounds as well as an incomparable symbiosis of the baroque and modern era – the anniversary season “20 Years Immling” is already casting its shadow now…

Bad Endorf / Immling – The anniversary season “20 Years Immling” is once again inviting guests to events featuring extraordinary productions that are idyllically located on the green hills in the vicinity of Lake Chiemsee. The premiere of “The Magic Flute” forms the prelude on Friday, 10 June. Mozart’s successful opera with the always topical subject of wisdom, love and power paved the way for the history of the Immling Opera Festival 20 years ago and once again promises a special, fascinating perspective of the magical events in the new anniversary production. In addition, a shortened children’s version of the story around the bird catcher Papageno will also be offered for all young and old opera fans.

“Love is a wild bird”, and starting on Saturday, 18 June it will unleash a rampant flow of desire: Bizet’s most successful opera “Carmen” is about a liaison on the edge of society – fiery, immoral and uncompromising! The gypsy woman Carmen seduces the soldier Don José into a world of sin – and the merciless consequences are not long in coming…

The Immling “BaRock”, which provides authentic baroque sounds in combination with enthralling rhythms and multi-visual effects, is a style that is hard to imagine without being presented on the stage of the Immling Festival Theatre, and boasts a growing number of visitors every year. Starting on Saturday, 23 July, pure emotions around a war hero, fire-spitting monster and all-consuming romances will be featured at Immling in Handel’s BaRock opera “Rinaldo”.

Take the power of fate, yearning love and drunken friars and you’ll get one of the most popular works of the 20th century: Carl Orff’s “Carmina Burana”. The great textual impact of Orff’s masterpiece will now be evident in Immling. Together with the “little world theatre”, “Der Mond” (The Moon) is a fantastic opera about the theft of the bright celestial body. The premiere for the production of “Carmina Burana & Der Mond” is on Saturday, 2 July.

In addition to the opera productions, the programme diversity at Immling in the anniversary year will also be shown again in the concert series which awaits guests with an Anniversary Gala on Saturday, 9 July. Director Ludwig Baumann and musical director Cornelia von Kerssenbrock invite guests to review a success story that encompasses two decades. In addition to the “Immlinger Highlights”, a musical retrospective, the “Immlinger Generations and Nations” and the “Immlinger Stars”, i.e. singers who started their career in Immling and now sing on the world’s great stages, should also not be missing.

A popular constant in the Festival programme are the “Sunset Concerts”, which invite visitors to enjoy the “Love Songs of the Nations”  on Thursday, 14 July 2016. After all, there are two things which are boundless in our world: love and music! Singers from many nations will take you along on an emotional journey around the globe with love songs from their homeland, and the entire event is set in the romantic atmosphere of an Immlinger sunset.

With the cue “sunset”, thoughts will wander to a cult evening to which tribute will also be paid in the coming year at Immling: “O sole mio” (Thursday, 28 July). International tenors will vie for the favour of the ladies with Neapolitan love songs and arias during sunset on the Immling piazza – and not only bring the female guests to raptures…

Aficionados of classical piano music will also strike gold again in the anniversary season thanks to the studio from Antje Tesche-Mentzen in Hafendorf – this time with a Studio Concert “Janoska Ensemble – Imperial Sounds” (Sunday, 24 July at 11:00am).

The “grand finale” of the anniversary season with the Festival’s soloists, the Immling Festival Choir and the orchestra of the Baku State Opera under the direction of Cornelia von Kerssenbrock will once again be the “Finale Grande” (Sunday, 7 August), a musical fireworks for opera fans that is traditionally already sold out shortly after Christmas.

In addition to the programme offers in terms of opera and concert, dance will also be presented with several programme offers in the anniversary year.

Over five decades at the top, countless chart successes and the status as legendary musicians of their era: the Rolling Stones have always managed to hit the nerve of the times again and again. Choreographer Peter Breuer (winner of the German Dance Prize 2015) is now paying tribute to the cult rockers with his new creation entitled “Dance for Satisfaction”, a Rolling Stones dance theatre. Hits such as “Paint It, Black”, “Start Me Up” or “Satisfaction” may not only make the feet of Stones’ fans itch for a dance!

But very different contemporaries are also on tap to celebrate a ball with their songs: Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Cats”. Rock ‘n’ roll and glamour stars, gangster couples, lazybones, actors and villains – after the premiere in the spring of 2016, starting on 26 July the Immling Festival Youth Choir will once again slip into the roles of “Jellicle Cats” and show that these nights are anything but grey.

Visitors can look forward to a “Spanish Night” with flamenco, guitarists and dancers, drumming and fiery horses, sangria and paella under a starry sky on Saturday, 11 June. Olé!

The anniversary season “20 Years Immling” will be rounded off with another guest performance by the Joseph Hipp Puppet Theatre (Wednesday, 22 June). The Georgian puppeteers feature self-designed and self-made puppets which will delight the audience with a perfected performance. And in the last week of the Festival, young artists will once again conquer the stage of the Festival Theatre during the Children’s Culture Week. The children will learn aspects of acting, playing and singing in an orchestra, acrobatics and clownery, dancing, tailoring costumes and building stage scenery under professional guidance from 9 to 13 August. And then in the public final performance of “The Jungle Book” they will slip into the roles of Mowgli, Baloo and Shere Khan and take all spectators along on an adventurous journey into the jungle.

20 Years Immling – a success story whose countdown to the great anniversary has already started!
